York's Magic Snickelways The Magic Snickelways are passageways that span the city of York. They are featured in S P Grey's books The Last Vikings and The Return of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer, where the Vikings still living secretly in York use them to cross the city, unseen by the townies! They are based on the actual snickelways and you can follow their path across the city. To do this, you can use the map provided in each book or refer to Mark Jones classic book, 'A Walk Around the Snickelways of York.' Many of the snickelways trace their origins back to Viking times. The Magic Snickelways are magical passageways. If you walk around York and look for them, you will find strange archways on several ordinary looking walls which seem to mark a passageway, yet there is no door beneath them. Or you may see strange houses or churches that appear to lean precariously or are crooked, as if they are hiding something beside them. Or you may even see a solitary door which has nothing behind it and wonder why it is there. Many of these are the snickelway entrances. But even if you do find them, you will not be able to enter unless you know which bricks to press and the secret password! Or will you? Each copy of The Last Vikings or The Return of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer comes with a free snickelway map! |
