 York Viking Walk

This is the website for the York Viking Walk - York's premier walk experience and one of the must do things in any visit to York! On this site you can find out all you need to know about the Viking Walk. You can also read about the Vikings in York, which was the capital city of Viking England in the 9th and 10th centuries.

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL VIKING WALK ON BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 30 AUGUST.

AFTER THIS, THE NEXT WALK WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY 17 SEPTEMBER. APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE. I AM TAKING A SHORT BREAK FROM PILLAGING!

The York Viking Walk is a fascinating tour of Viking York. Time travel back to the 9th century and see where the Vikings fought to take the city in a bloody battle in 867. Find out how the Vikings' cunning and ferocity overcame the resistance of the Saxon kings who desperately defended the city! You will also see where the Vikings lived and worked in the city, which became an important commercial centre and had a population higher than any other English city.

Follow the links to read about the Viking Conquest of York in 866 and again in 867, read about Viking Life in York and about how the Vikings were finally defeated. You can also find out more about  S P Grey, your guide on the Viking Walk, and his children's books, The Last Vikings and The Return of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer, both of which are set in York.

S P Grey - Simon Grey - has lived in York for over 20 years. A picture of him is shown above (not a man to be messed with!).  As well as a writer of bestselling children's books, Simon is an amateur historian and an expert in the Vikings, the Saxons and the city of York.

The Viking Walk takes place at 6pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It leaves from behind All Saints Church on Parliament Street, across the road from Marks & Spencer's main clock tower entrance - look out for the boards identifying the Walk's start point. It lasts an hour. There are discounts available for children and groups. More details, including a map showing the start point,  are available on the York Viking Walk page

BE WARNED!

The Viking Walk is not for the faint hearted!

The Vikings were a ruthless force in cruel times. As well as their many battles in York, the Walk covers Viking battle tactics, their weapons, Harald Hardrada ("the ruthless") King of the Norwegian Vikings and the furious Viking Berserkers who showed no mercy.

You will also hear about the infamous Erik Bloodaxe, King of York - possibly the most aptly named of all Viking leaders! You will hear about Erik's reign in York and how he got his name.

Finally, the battles of Fulford and Stamford Bridge near York in 1066 decided the fate of both England and the Vikings as an invading force. No quarter was given by either the Vikings or the Saxons, and the bones were left to rot slowly on the battlefields!
